New York will deploy another 150 National Guard members to assist with the state’s ongoing migrant influx, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday in New York City.

That will bring the total number of members assigned to help with migrants to 2,200. 

Of that total, 250 members will focus solely on case management, which includes a number of Venezuelan migrants, for whom the Biden administration last week offered Temporary Protected Status to. Under that authorization, Venezuelans who arrived in the United States on or before July 31 of this year are eligible for legal status for 18 months. They can also apply to legally work without having to wait 180 days.

“You’ll be helping them get a job, helping them support themselves, helping them leave these shelters because I believe they didn’t came all these thousands of miles to live in a shelter,” Hochul said.

The governor said the National Guard is already surveying the migrants.

"The New York National Guard and our state defense forces are prepared and ready to respond to save lives, mitigate suffering and protect property," said Major General Ray Shields, commander of the New York Army National Guard.
