ST. LOUIS — The director of health for St. Louis City announced her resignation Friday.
Dr. Matifadza Hlatshwayo Davis was appointed to her role in October 2021. She did not say exactly why she decided to step down from her role.
“This moment is about claiming my agency, my rest, and doing what is best for me and my family,” Davis said on Facebook.
“Something women, especially Black women, are rarely afforded the space or support to do. So, I’m claiming it. With love, intention and pride.”
Davis mentioned some accomplishments during her time as director, such as leading the city through COVID-19 and virus variants; establishing St. Louis’ first Behavioral Health Bureau; created the first department-wide performance management system and noted how the department grew by more than 36%.
“I’ve poured my heart into this city and I leave this role with my head high and my heart full. We built something powerful together and I’m beyond proud of the legacy we’re leaving behind,” she said on Facebook.
Davis mentioned that the title of “Community Doctor” is one she will always carry with her.
“That’s who I’ve always been and who I’ll always be,” she said. “I am excited for what the next chapter holds in innovation, leadership, and advocacy, and I remain grateful for the opportunity to serve and for every person who shaped me on this journey.”
Davis said she will stay during the transition period. The City has not named her replacement yet.
