CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. - A middle school student at Pine Ridge Middle School was killed in a school bus crash on Thursday. The Chester County Coroner's office has identified the boy as 13-year-old Jose Maria Gonzalez Linares. The overturned bus left at least 20 other people injured.
According to the Chester County Sheriff's Office, the accident resulted from a blown tire that caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Two other buses were in the convoy but were able to avoid any collisions.
“Our hearts are broken by the tragic bus accident in Chester County this afternoon,” State Superintendent Ellen Weaver said in a statement. "Our entire state is mourning alongside the Pine Ridge Middle School families, friends, classmates, and educators. Please join me in praying for the Lexington Two community.”
The outpouring of support has continued to roll in from state leaders including Governor Henry McMaster. The governor posted to social media saying, "Today’s school bus accident in Chester County is a tragedy no family should ever have to endure. Peggy and I are heartbroken. Please join us in praying for the victim, their family, a speedy recovery for those injured, and the entire Lexington Two community. All of South Carolina is with you."
