The inclement weather was a welcome addition for Tabinda Iftikhar as she handed out Iftar meals with the nonprofit Muslim Community Network recently to help Muslim New Yorkers break their Ramadan fast.
"It feels even better. Rain is a sign of blessings," Iftikhar said. "Some of these folks that are here to receive these meals may not be able to afford even having, you know, a single date to open their fast."

"My father tells me a lot of stories about her, how she would volunteer and help, especially children in the community," she said.
Iftikhar started helping out at Muslim Community Network eight years ago. And then, when she started working at JPMorganChase, she brought the banking institution with her to the network to hand out Iftar meals.
"This is a holy month. One of the things that we do during this month is to find ways that we can help the community," she said.
Aside from her service during Ramadan, Iftikhar also organizes financial wellness classes for Muslim communities throughout the city.
"As a single Muslim mom, I should say, I faced a lot of financial hardships, and I would never want my community to face the hardships that I faced," she said.
Iftikhar also spearheaded a gift distribution to mark Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, last year. She has another one in the works for Eid al-Adha this spring. It’s all an effort to support her fellow Muslim New Yorkers.
"When you think about Christmas and children look forward to receiving toys... that's exactly what Eid is about," she said. "It is a holy month for us, and it's very near and dear to my heart."
