  • Meyers used to take ballet 25 years ago and said it brings her back to her roots

For the past year, Annie Meyers has been taking the adult ballet class.

“I found so much joy in it,” said Meyers. “It’s difficult, but it’s very fun. I got my courage up and just showed up. I haven’t done any ballet in over 25 years at that point. If you did it as a kid, there’s more of a performance aspect. You want to be good in the recital. Our classes, it’s all for you.”

The Milwaukee Ballet offers adult classes for all levels of expertise. Classes not only help participants learn the art of ballet but also allow them to get a workout in.

Catey Ott-Thompson has been a ballet instructor with the company for over a decade. She said dance is for everybody.

“Ballet and dance movement, fitness in general really works the whole body and the whole person,” said Ott-Thompson. “We have our musicality, we have our artistry, we have our sense of awareness, our sense of space. We’re using our whole brain, memorizing our combinations and rhythms.”

By stepping out of her comfort zone, Meyers said she has found a community within her ballet class.

“Getting out of whatever it is you do day to day and doing something different,” said Meyers. “Being in our body, it really clears my mind. I don’t think of anything else.”

The company also offers dance fitness classes.
