ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — It’s that time of year again when the downtown St. Pete waterfront has been transformed into a race track.

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg roars into downtown for the weekend.

This year's event will feature 10 races from six different series. March 5 marks the Indy Car season opener.

Crews spent days building the 1.8-mile, 14-turn course, winding through favorite city landmarks.

Race organizers say they expect crowd levels to return to pre-pandemic levels this year.

Mayor Ken Welch says the Grand Prix is a great opportunity to boost local businesses and tourism in the area.

And both new and returning drivers say they are excited to get the season started.

Fans planning to attend can expect changes to the grandstand, including more leg room to the seats.
