Five NYPD officers suffered minor injuries and a suspect is in custody after a police chase that started in Suffolk County and ended in Brooklyn.
Authorities say the suspect, who Suffolk County police later identified as 33-year-old Holmark Garces, originally fled authorities on Long Island after abducting a woman he knew at knife point while she was walking in Brentwood Wednesday night.
Police say Garces forced the woman into his Toyota Corolla around 8:35 p.m. and fled the scene.
Witnesses immediately phoned 911 to report the incident.
Suffolk County Patrol units located Garces’ vehicle as it was traveling eastbound on Southern State Parkway and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver evaded the officers and continued westbound, Suffolk County police say.
Garces then drove through Nassau County into Queens and then onto the Belt Parkway to Brooklyn, Suffolk County police say.
Eventually, he exited the highway in Bay Ridge where NYPD officers arrested him.
Before the arrest was made, however, Suffolk County police say Garces rammed into NYPD patrol units with his vehicle, injuring three officers.
While assisting in the arrest of the suspect, two more NYPD officers were injured as the man resisted police, officials say.
All five officers were treated for minor injuries at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where they were released shortly thereafter.
Police say Garces, of Bay Shore, was taken into police custody around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
The suspect suffered a minor laceration to the head and was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he is in NYPD custody.
Police say the female victim in the vehicle suffered no injuries.
According to the NYPD, Graces has been charged with the following: Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator, Failure to Obey a Traffic Device, Red Light Violation and One Way Violation on a Designated Road.
Following his arraignment, Garces will be transferred to Suffolk County, where he will be charged with Kidnapping 2nd Degree and Criminal Contempt 1st Degree, and will be arraigned by local police at a later date, authorities said.
