John Francis has been living at Isabella Geriatric Center for three years. He has dementia and a pacemaker.

On Monday, he tested positive for COVID-19.

"It’s coming in with your staff and if you are not testing your staff and if you don’t have the equipment to test the patients either. That’s my biggest concern. They are flying by the seat of their pants. They don’t know what the hell they are doing in there,” said Marilyn Francis, wife of John.

NY1 uncovered last week that the death toll at Isabella was much higher than state reports.

As of the end of April, at least 98 residents of Isabella had died at the nursing home or at a nearby hospital.

When our story first aired, just a tiny fraction of those fatalities were being reported by the state.

On Tuesday, the state revised its numbers to include “presumed COVID deaths” — people who did not have a positive test for COVID-19 but had a suspected case. Positive cases were already included in the numbers.

The state is not including in these figures the number of nursing home residents who were transferred to a hospital and died there.

The local assemblywoman thinks that should change.

“I think the state should be looking at what hospital deaths are happening from members that were in the nursing home. I think it will give us a better picture of how dire the situation is at the nursing home,” said Carmen de La Rosa, State Assemblywoman.

We are told the state attorney general’s office is investigating complaints at Isabella as well as other nursing homes.

The same organization that runs Isabella, known as MJHS Health System, also operates this facility in Brooklyn — Menorah Center.

“An award winning center located on ten beautiful acres in Manhattan Beach Brooklyn,” the promotional video boasts.

Before Tuesday, the state was not reporting any deaths here.

Now state records show, 49 residents have died here.

The vast majority of them were presumed COVID, but did not have positive tests.

After NY1’s reporting, MJHS set up a phone line for families of Menorah residents to call to get updates on COVID cases.

“Thank you for calling Menorah, a 436 bed not for profit center for rehabilitation and nursing care. This is your 5/4 update. Yesterday three residents had a new positive test result. And sadly we had one COVID related death. The leadership at menorah cares about every loss and our deepest sympathy goes out to all the residents that have passed,” the family hotline recorded.

On Tuesday, the message said there were no new cases at Menorah.
