BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Jose Contla, 26, was around the corner from his job at his brother’s bakery when he was mowed down by a hit and run driver in Bensonhurst early Sunday morning.

His family and friends were left devastated.

"You just destroyed a whole family man, family friends a whole bunch of people, you destroyed me," said Antonio Rodriguez, the victim’s friend.

Contla parked his white Mercedes on 19th Avenue off of 86th Street just before 7:30 a.m. when police say a black sedan struck him.

Witnesses say the driver was speeding.

Surveillance video shows the moments right after the Sedan made impact with Contla.

A neighbor saw him on the floor and rushed over to help.

"I come up to the guy, I check the pulse, I see nothing going. I asked some people over here I’m like guys, the guy is not breathing call 911," said the neighbor.

Contla was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center but could not be saved.

Anontio Rodriguez has been friends with Contla for two decades. Both of their families immigrated to Brooklyn from Mexico.

"After I found out about it I called his phone it was off, I called the bakery they said he didn’t show up for work. Everything was just pointing at him," Rodriguez said.

Friends say Contla was married and living at home with his mother and siblings.

While working at his brothers’ traditional Mexican restaurant, Cantla was going back to school with hopes of becoming a lawyer.

"I guess just make them proud, make his mom proud," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez laid flowers and lit candles on top of Contla’s car. One of them was white, a tradition in Mexican culture.

"I don’t know what happens after life but I just really hope that my friend Jose is resting in peace now," Rodriguez said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing but are asking anyone with information to call the NYPD crime stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-8477.
