BROOKLYN, N.Y. - At Butter & Scotch in Crown Heights, tempting treats and strong opinions are their business.

"We are not shy about screaming our politics and we've sort of become known for it in the community," said Butter & Scotch Owner Keavy Landreth.

So, when the folks behind this bakery and bar were asked to use their talents to send a message to Senate Republicans overseeing President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, they jumped at it.

Landreth says the result was 53 cakes made to entice, each decorated with a phrase like "history has its eyes on you," followed by "Let Bolton testify, it's a pretty clear message."

That's former national security adviser John Bolton, who reportedly writes in his forthcoming book that President Trump told him that he wanted to withhold military aid from Ukraine until it helped with investigations into Democratic rival Joe Biden — key to the articles of impeachment against President Trump.

So far, Republicans in the GOP controlled chamber are resisting allowing witness testimony in the proceedings. Landreth says Bolton should be allowed to speak.

"He was so close to it and he came out and he said in his newest memoir and said very blatantly that Trump did exactly what he's getting impeached for," Landreth said.

It took a team to deliver the cakes to senate Republicans in Washington on Wednesday. 

Landreth says most were turned away but customers aren't surprised that they tried.

"This is the kind of stuff that they do so it didn't surprise me but I think it's great," said Tom Hall, a bakery customer.

Bakery workers say it's a sweet way to try to get lawmakers to listen, even when they know it's a longshot.

"It's a way for us to force our voices to be heard because tradition routes don't seem to work," Landreth said.
