These shoes are a somber memorial to the four men killed in a deadly shooting in Crown Heights.
A community gathering to remember victims like 32-year-old John Thomas whose life was senselessly cut short.
“He’s gonna always be upheld up as a great father, a great son, a great being, like he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Teia Floyd, a friend of the victim.
This vigil is a response to the killings at the Triple Aces club during an illegal gambling event Saturday. Sources say one man may have gotten angry and started shooting, exchanging gunfire with the bouncer. In the end 7 people were shot.
"America has a handgun crisis and that is the leading number of killings in America, but the reason that we don't hear about it enough is because that crisis lies in the inner city," said Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President.
Brooklyn borough president and frustrated local leaders say the incident shouldn't be normalized or treated as routine.
“This is a mass shooting and when that happens that allows resources to come here," said Adams.
“Put real resources so that they can get jobs, real resources their kids have programs and afterschool programs to go to," said Xenia Barnes, an anti-violence activist.
As investigators try to pin down exactly what caused the violence, loved ones are left to mourn the victims.
Thomas' loved ones say their lives have been forever changed, thinking of the families now forced to pick up the pieces after this tragic shooting.
"He loved his daughter, he loved his mother, he loved his wife, it’s just a sad, sad situation." said Barnes.
