BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A construction worker was recovering in the hospital Friday after investigators say he fell through the roof of a school in Brooklyn.

It happened just after 8:45 a.m. at the Edward B. Shallow Junior High School located at 6500 16th Avenue in Bensonhurst.

Fire officials say the worker was using some sort of heavy machinery during a resurfacing project when a section of the roof gave way.

About a dozen workers were on site at the time of the collapse.

"They were doing maintenance on the roof and they had a piece of heavy equipment and one section of the roof was weak. It's a concrete structure, but part of it was weak," said FDNY Deputy Chief Mark Egan.

The worker was taken to Maimonides Hospital where he is expected to be okay.

The city Department of Education says no students, teachers or staff were inside the school at the time.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
