People won't be able to walk under the Grand Army Plaza Soldiers and Sailors Arch anytime soon.

The area beneath the arch will be barricaded as the Prospect Park Alliance restores the monument over the next two years.

The move comes after a small piece of mortar fell off the 126 year old structure in December. No one was injured.

With $9 million  in funding from the mayor's office, architects say work will be done to replace the roof membrane, to clean the stone from top to bottom, and to install new lighting.

While the arch is barricaded, alliance officials say it shouldn't deter locals and tourists to visit.

"There's a walkway right around the outside of it. So, there's plenty of room for pedestrians to get around it and you can still get close and see the statues," said Alden Maddry, an architect with the Prospect Park Alliance.

The project is currently in the design phase.

Work is expected to start by 2020.
