A Brooklyn lawmaker calls for a new law requiring pet stores to only sell animals from shelters and rescue groups.

City Councilman Justin Brannan plans on introducing the bill later this Fall.

He says if it becomes law, it will help crack down on inhumane puppy and kitty mills and help dogs and cats in shelters find good homes.

"To be selling animals from puppy mills and kitten mills when so many animals, perfectly good healthy animals are looking for a home, is not only heartbreaking it just doesn't make sense. " said Brannan.

According to www.bestfriends.org , five municipalities in the state, like Port Chester and Mamaroneck, already have a similar law.
