Researchers are trying to figure out just what makes the city so noisy.
Scientists with NYU and Ohio State University have installed 50 noise sensors throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. The effort is part of a five year study - titled "Sounds of New York City". Noise sensors are currently recording how loud the noise gets in certain areas of the city. Researchers hope that what they learn will eventually help people and businesses reduce the noise they create - on their own.
"Reducing that level or reducing times that it's occuring out of hours, maybe during the night when you're trying to sleep or relax, It should really bring about an improvement in people's habits and life cycles. So more sleep, less stress," said Charlie Mydlarz, NYU Center for Urban Sapce and Progress.
These noise sensors aren't recording your coversations, just measuring the volume.
