Patty Lee of Zagat checked out two new ice cream treats you need to try before the summer ends. She filed this report for NY1.
You have probably seen the summer’s hottest new dessert all over Instagram. Yup, we’re talking about the made-to-order ice cream rolls at Chinatown’s 10Below.
“Our ice cream is made very quickly as you can see,” says Richard Tam, co-owner of 10Below. “It happens in about two minutes or so and that allows the ice cream to freeze very quickly and it forms smaller ice crystals, causing the ice cream to be a lot creamier and richer than regular ice cream without us having to add so much fat just to make it kind of that same rich texture. So you can customize it however you like. You can add whatever fruits and toppings you want.”
It is not just the show that has New Yorkers lining up for an hour, but flavor combos that indulge our inner kid.
“One of our more popular flavors is the S’mores Galore,” Tam says. “That’s chocolate ice cream with graham crackers crushed in, topped with a roasted marshmallow and more graham crackers on top as a garnish.”
The ice cream is very creamy, and I love the little bits of graham cracker that are scattered throughout, and were basically pulverized during the making of. Little bits of chocolate sauce on top really gives it that campfire treat feel.
Over at Lafayette in NoHo, pastry chef Jennifer Yee is also riffing on another classic childhood treat: the push-pop.
“I’ve always loved push pops,” she says. “I grew up running after the ice cream truck and getting those Flintstones push pops.”
In a fancy French twist, her version of a tutti frutti popsicle gets a rainbow of crushed up macarons.
“I have served macaron ice cream in the past at the restaurant,” Yee says. “We figured we could put the same macaron ice cream in a push-pop. They range from birthday cake to our signature Lafayette, which is a bergamot flavor, and then we have a matcha macaron, we have pineapple macaron, so with every bite you can get a different flavored macaron."
It is really bright and nice and creamy and every little bite has a surprise macaron. It is definitely a modern push-pop for adults.
