Police say a 22-year-old man is dead after being shot by officers responding to a call for help at this 7/11 on East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. Saturday. According to the NYPD, two employees at the store observed a man walking back and forth throughout the store for 20 minutes.
One of the employees stepped outside to speak to a relative, police said.
“When the employee returned the male was observed behind the counter with another employee and that employee looked very nervous,” Benjamin Gurley, assistant chief at Bronx Borough Patrol, said at a news conference Saturday evening.
The store is steps away from the 45th Precinct.
Police say the relative of the employee walked over immediately and told cops she saw the suspect behind the counter taking merchandise.
Two officers then responded and found the suspect near the coffee machines, according to officials.
“One officer gave several commands to the male inside the location to take his hands out of his sweatshirt pocket,” Gurley said. “As the officer gave those commands, that male then advanced on the officer, revealing a knife.”
“That male advancing down the officer produced a kitchen knife and began to lunge at the officer that was giving him verbal commands,” he continued.
Police say that officer shot the suspect once in the torso.
Officers recovered this kitchen knife from the suspect, according to the NYPD.
“Both officers then immediately rendered first aid. They called for EMS and the perpetrator was removed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:14 p.m.,” Gurley said.
Police say the employees and officers were not hurt and that the responding officer will not be put on leave.
