After meeting Sunday with a 5-year-old girl, who is now in stable condition after investigators says she was shot in Williamsbridge Friday, Edward Caban indicated it’s his longtime role as a father that is contributing greatly to how he handles his new role as the NYPD’s acting police commissioner.
“I have children of my own and I know how I would feel as a parent,” Caban said outside of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. “Any parent can relate to that. I am here first and foremost as a parent. I spoke to the parents and let them know that they have the full weight of the NYPD behind them, and we will bring justice!”

- The violent weekend took place on new Acting Police Commissioner Edward Caban’s first weekend in the new role
- Caban met with a 5-year-old victim who was shot in the Bronx on Friday
At a media briefing Sunday, which provided updates to several high-profile shootings that have taken place since Thursday, the NYPD said the shooting of that 5-year-old girl near a public vigil was related to the homicide death of a man that took place the night before, just around the block.
“Kid was in very good spirits, very happy,” said Caban. “I was honored and privileged to visit with her. She is a hero.”
Less fortunate this weekend was a 15-year-old boy who was killed Saturday night, after police say he was shot multiple times around his body on the basketball court at Riverbank State Park in Harlem.
In response, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation issued a statement Sunday saying they would step up park police night patrols and reviewing security measures, with the goal of implementing any changes that are needed.
In the meantime, the NYPD also said the person who fired a shot that injured three people Saturday on a Bx4 bus in Melrose was actually trying to interrupt a robbery that was taking place.
Three passengers, including a woman who was grazed by the bullet in the chest, suffered injured that were not life threatening, officials say.
All the violent incidents from this weekend leave Caban with little time to ease into his new role after former Commissioner Keechant Sewell officially stepped down on Friday.
