COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State held its annual Buckeye Pinwheel Planting and Transplant Reunion over the weekend to celebrate organ donations.

Former transplant patients, deceased organ donors, living kidney and living liver donors were honored during the event where 13,200 pinwheels were planted to represent an organ transplant performed at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center since its first one performed in 1967.

The pinwheels have eight spokes, supported by one stem, to represent how one person can save up to eight lives through organ donation and transplantation.

There are approximately 115,300 Americans awaiting a lifesaving transplant. Last year the Comprehensive Transplant Center performed 603 transplants.
