Thousands of protesters marched down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan Saturday, part of nationwide "Hands Off!" demonstrations rallying against the Trump administration and Elon Musk.

Starting at Bryant Square Park, protesters chanted ““Hey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go!” as they made their way south to Madison Square Park.

Demonstrators said they’re afraid of cuts to programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Others decried President Donald Trump saying he’d like to make federal cuts to education and public broadcasting.

“Our country, our planet, our society is under attack by the Trump Administration, by DOGE and Elon Musk. This is an emergency. What they’re doing is also illegal on so many levels, so I came out with my family because we need to put an end to it,” Liat Olenick said.

“I think that the Trump administration is totally reckless. If we all stand up together, then maybe people will actually have to pay attention and respond to it,” Alex Yablon said.

In a statement, the White House said: “President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security to Medicare and Medicaid to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”

"Hands Off!" demonstrations were organized for more than 1,200 locations in all 50 states by more than 150 groups, including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LBGTQ+ advocates, veterans and elections activists.

Protesters nationwide also voiced anger over the administration’s moves to fire thousands of federal workers, deport immigrants, scale back protections for transgender people and cut funding for health programs.

Musk, a Trump adviser who owns Tesla, SpaceX and the social media platform X, has played a key role in the downsizing as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. He says he is saving taxpayers billions of dollars.
