ORLANDO, Fla. — Getting through Silver Star Road isn't the easiest these days due to construction, but officials say some of that road work is expected to reduce crashes in the area.

The Florida Department of Transportation has a construction project going on right now to install operational and safety improvements for Silver Star Road from Princeton Street to Orange Blossom Trail.

One of the biggest changes in the nearly $6 million project is a traffic separator at Hansrob Road near John Young Parkway.

According to FDOT, left turns to and from side streets and driveways in the area have led to crashes. The traffic separator and raised median will prevent left turns.

Drivers can expect daytime lane and road closures during this road work, which won't wrap up until the fall.

The project also includes repaving the roadway, upgrading traffic and pedestrian signals, filling sidewalk gaps, and creating new bike lanes.

Harvey Kebler is a member of the Central Florida Railroad Modelers Club, which is located near the corner of Silver Star Road and John Young Parkway.

“You got people trying to make a left here,” Kebler said. “They're not supposed to. And traffic backs up sometimes quite a bit.”

Kebler said he hopes this new project helps.

“The left turn, it really, really blocks things up,” he said.
