“It has been our pleasure to serve the Bronx community with great movie-going for many years,” the theater said in its statement. “We truly thank you for your dedicated patronage and hope you've created special movie memories with us.”
Its final showtime was at 9:30 p.m.
Some Bronx residents came Tuesday night to create one final memory at the theater.
It was a surprise for Yanitri Ortiz’s two children, Maylani and Ian Cortez.
“When she saw the sign, she was like, ‘Oh, I told you we were going to the theater,’” she said.
Families said the closure isn’t only going to leave a hole in Concourse Plaza, but a hole in the community.
“Now, I have to go all the way to Harlem for my daughter to watch a movie, so you know, it’s just sad,” Bronx resident Frederico Ortiz said.
The closest movie theater to the Concourse Plaza is on 125th Street in Harlem.
Due to this closure, the Bronx will now have just one movie theater: AMC Bay Plaza Cinema 13 in Co-op City.
This will become a massive inconvenience for those relying on public transportation.
When using the MTA, it takes about 20 minutes to get to the Harlem theater, but an hour to get to Co-op City from the Concourse Plaza.
“It’s going to be a tragic, terrible thing for this movie to go away,” Bronx resident Curtis Austin said.
The closure comes weeks after College Point Multiplex Cinemas in Queens permanently shuttered after 25 years in business.
