We've been concentrating on the presidential election for the past week, but now the focus turns to the local races that could be decided by absentees.
Most Boards of Elections started their absentee count Monday. Onondaga was pushed back a day due to a court order, so they start Tuesday.
The county has 57,407 absentees to go through.
When you break it down in the closest races: There are still 19,572 votes to count between Al Stirpe and Mark Venesky, as the Democrat tries to hold onto his seat in the 127th Assembly District. Venesky holds a little more than a 1,000 vote lead after Election Night.
Angi Renna has a little more of a cushion. The Republican leads John Mannion in the 50th Senate District by more than 7,000 votes with 37,000 absentees to count. That seat was vacated midterm so either candidate would be a newcomer in Albany.
And the 53rd Senate seat is truly anyone's race. Incumbent Rachael May leads Republican challenger Sam Rogers by just 138 votes. Russell Penner is the third candidate in that race. There are 20,300 absentees to count there.
The Onondaga County board plans to post updated results at 9 o'clock each night, and we'll continue to keep you updated on some of those key races.
