After a pause in the music in Coney Island last summer, a legendary free concert series is back — and this time, it has a permanent home. Brooklyn reporter Jeanine Ramirez has the story.
With more than three decades of performances, the Seaside Summer Concert Series has become a staple of Coney Island.
The tradition of weekly shows ended last year because there was no dedicated venue.
But now the free concerts are back, and they'll take place at the new state-of-the-art Ford Amphitheater at the Coney Island Boardwalk.
"We were looking for a home for the Seaside Concert Series," Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said. "We're no longer homeless; we have a home now."
The borough president hosts the shows, and Debra Garcia produces them. Garcia says the most impressive feature of the 5,000-seat amphitheater is that it's a covered space.
"We can bring in great sound equipment, we can bring in great lights, and we can bring in great bands," said Garcia, the executive producer of the concert series. "But we can't control what happens with the weather, and that's why this is a dream come true."
Longtime Brooklyn state senator and borough president, Marty Markowitz, began the series at Midwood Field. The venue moved twice after that.
Now officials hope the amphitheater will be its permanent home.
This year's performances include Billy Ocean, a Latino night with Victor Manuelle, and an ABBA tribute.
Tickets are slated to be distributed at the boardwalk box office an hour before each show.
Additional shows will be co-produced with the promoter Live Nation, including Kool and the Gang and Rick Springfield.
About a thousand tickets for each of those performances will be free, with a different distribution system.
"We'll be releasing tickets to the public two days prior to the shows, right here from the 21st Street boardwalk," Garcia said.
Meantime, the free shows over at the MLK Concert Series at Wingate Field also kicked off this week with Kool Moe Dee and old school night.
"We do our best at both series to make sure we have something for everybody," Garcia said.
And this year, Coney Island concert goers no longer have to bring their beach chairs.
Thursday night's show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
