A legendary singer spent more than a decade hoping to say thanks to some Bronx police officers. On Friday, he got the chance. NY1's Dean Meminger filed this report.

Singer Antone Tavares of the legendary R&B group Tavares met with Bronx detectives Friday, something he's been wanting to do for a long time.

"Actually 11 years," Tavares said. "The person who murdered my son was on the run for a year and a half."

Antone Tavares and his four brothers recorded a string of hits in the 1970s.

In 2002, lead singer Antone, who went by the nickname Chubby, was devastated when his son Jason was shot dead in Florida during a drug deal that went bad.

"I will never get my son back, but I know that the guy who has taken him away will be away for many, many years," Tavares said.

Eighteen months after the shooting, the NYPD captured the killer outside a building on Bryant Avenue in the Bronx. Aura Chacon was one of the officers patrolling the area who put the cuffs on the suspect.

"Upon him exiting, someone pointed him out, and that's when I approached him and I apprehended him," Chacon said. "He gave no fight."

Now a detective, Chacon said she's proud she helped to bring closure to the singer.

Antone Tavares said he always thinks about his son, Jason. He recently released an Album called "Can't Knock Me Down" with a song dedicated to his son.

"It's all about what's going on in this country today," said Tavares. "Not only here, but throughout the whole world. People are violently killing each other, and there's no need for it, man. We need to think about love, peace and happiness."

Bronx detectives gave Tavares a souvenir to remember them. He said he'll never forget how they have helped him.
