Some City Council members are leading a new push to expand eligibility for the city’s "Fair Fares" discount program.
The program launched in 2019 and offers 50% off fares for the subway, some buses and Access-a-Ride services.
New York residents with income levels at or below the federal poverty line can sign up.
During an appearance on “Mornings On 1” Monday, Councilwoman Selveena Brooks-Powers, who heads the council’s transportation committee, said she supports expanding eligibility to those with incomes up to 200% of the federal poverty level.
She also hopes to increase awareness of the program because only about 280,000 out of the estimated 932,000 who meet eligibility are enrolled.
Brooks-Powers said under a new bill she will be introducing later this year, police would be required to provide information about the program to anyone caught trying to evade the fare on a subway or bus.
