The MTA's bus fleet is going greener, with ten electric buses getting set to hit the road by the end of this year.
The new-look buses will be rolled out as part of a pilot program to test the performance of electric buses on city streets.
"Electric bus technology is new for us," said Interim MTA CEO Ronnie Hakim. "We are leasing the first five of what will be a 10-bus group. As you know, New York City streets are hard on buses. And so we want to make sure that before we go out with a larger investment in electric buses, that this is a wise and prudent investment."
The pilot program is expected to stretch across three years. The first electric buses will roll out on the M42 in Manhattan, and the B32 and B39 routes in Brooklyn.
