Senators from New York and New Jersey want Washington to get a major transit project back on track.

Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Robert Menendez, and Cory Booker highlighted the need for the proposed Gateway Project in an op-ed in Tuesday's New York Times.

It includes building a new tunnel under the Hudson River and repairing tracks at Penn Station.

The transit hub recently suffered from two train derailments.

Schumer says he doubts President Donald Trump is serious about spending on infrastructure.

"The budget proposals he made don't really match up with the talk of a major infrastructure bill," Schumer said. "But again, we Senate Democrats are ready to work with him on a bill that produces real dollars for large infrastructure."

"It was annoying that it took me an extra three hours to get home last week, and then I was late most days," said one commuter.

"I don't understand why we keep having this problem," said a third. "I mean, trains go either forward or backward."

Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also sent a joint letter to Amtrak asking if state officials could take part in the railroad's review of its tracks.
