Plan to Bring LIRR to Terminal Beneath Grand Central Faces More Hurdles

Already years behind schedule, the project to bring the Long Island Rail Road to a new terminal beneath Grand Central has run into more hurdles.

MTA officials warned on Monday that the hoped-for December 2022 opening of the $10 billion project could be in jeopardy because of issues with Amtrak on the Queens end of the project.

"Some may be our fault, some may be Amtrak's fault, some may be the contractors' fault. It really doesn't matter at the moment whose fault it is. The project is significantly being affected,"  said MTA board member Mitchell Pally.

Major construction on East Side Access started a decade ago, with an original hoped-for 2013 opening and a much smaller price tag.
