The City Council considered legislation to strengthen oversight of the city’s foster care system Wednesday.
Committee members voted on three bills, focused on auditing and reporting the experiences of youth in foster homes or group homes.
The legislation specifically focused on the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth, and expanding annual surveys to include questions about gender expression, identity, and sexual orientation.
The survey would also include questions about interaction between kids and their experience with their caseworkers. The legislation also requires audits on foster care placement notices.
Bronx Councilmember Althea Stevens, who chairs the Committee on Children and Youth, joined “The Rush Hour” on Thursday to discuss how these bills would support young New Yorkers in foster care.
