Acclaimed poet and scholar Reginald Dwayne Betts is marking 20 years since he was released from prison.
As a teenager, Dwayne was convicted of committing an armed carjacking, prosecuted as an adult, served nine years in prison — much of that time in solitary confinement.
While incarcerated, Dwayne discovered the magic of the written word — devouring literature and poetry.
Upon his release, he became a Yale-educated lawyer, founded Freedom Reads, which builds libraries in prison cell blocks across the country.
Tuesday marks 20 years since his release from prison. He’s holding a one-man show at the Perelman Performing Arts Center to mark the occasion.
Dwayne joined “The Rush Hour” on Tuesday to talk about his anniversary and his latest book of poetry, “Doggerel.”
