In the wake of several recent high-profile attacks in the subway system, Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced she will introduce legislation to expand the state’s involuntary commitment laws as part of her upcoming executive budget.

Hochul says this will expand on Kendra’s Law, which allows judges to order those suffering from severe mental illness to undergo psychiatric treatment.

This comes as a new analysis of data from Vital City finds violent crime on the subway has gone up over the last decade, with 3.6 times as many felony assaults on the subway in 2024 compared to 2009.

Elizabeth Glazer, founder of Vital City, joined Annika Pergament on “The Rush Hour” Friday to discuss her analysis.
