President Joe Biden recently signed a potential TikTok ban into law.
The measure forces TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app within nine months or face a ban from United States app stores.
Those in favor of the legislation said the Chinese-owned app poses a cybersecurity threat to Americans. Opponents said a ban on TikTok would violate free speech.
“It’s actually ironic, because the freedom of expression on TikTok reflects the same American values that make the United States a beacon of freedom. TikTok gives everyday Americans a powerful way to be seen and heard, and that’s why so many people have made TikTok part of their daily lives,” CEO Shou Chew said in a TikTok video. “Rest assured, we aren’t going anywhere. We are confident, and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts.”
NY1 asked followers on social media: “Should TikTok be banned in the United States?”
Here are the results of the unofficial poll.
On X, more than 62% voted in favor of the ban, and more than 37% voted against the ban.
On Instagram, 52% voted “yes” and 48% voted “no.”
Rep. Ritchie Torres, who represents New York’s 15th District, and Kaisha Huguley, an actor and content creator, joined “The Rush Hour” on Thursday to weigh in on how “New York is Talking” about the potential ban of the app.
