The Buffalo Bills should be in the market to draft a cornerback at some point in this year’s NFL Draft, as they look to fill a starting spot opposite of rising star Christian Benford.
The club brought back veteran Dane Jackson, who spent a year away with Carolina, traded Kaiir Elam while last season’s starter, Rasul Douglas, remains a free agent.
A void at the position exists for Buffalo, and one player who made a big impression with pure speed at the NFL Scouting Combine was Kentucky’s Maxwell Hairston.
He was the fastest man at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine after running the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds in Indianapolis.
Hairston has a lanky frame to go with the speed, at 6'0" and 183 pounds. He loves facing receivers in one-on-one matchups.
“When I’m on an island by myself, it’s either me or you and I’ll take me every time,” he said.
At Kentucky, he was a playmaker with six interceptions in 20 career starts, and he returned three of them for touchdowns.
“Watching film, extra film, it gives me a chance to when I see certain stuff. I know I eliminate certain routes, I can dissect the receivers, see how they act when they know they’re getting the ball and when they’ve got to block, seeing who the quarterback’s favorite target is, seeing their favorite positions. Stuff like that just allows me to play faster,” he said.
Some analysts believe he needs to improve his tackling, and he did miss five games last season because of a shoulder injury. Still, he feels facing rugged competition in the SEC has him primed for the next level.
“It prepares you mentally and physically,” he said. “You’re playing against a dog week in and week out. Playing against NFL talent every week. Having a strong mental going into every game. Not letting any adversity in the game change the outcome. It just helped shape me into the player I am today, ready to take on the NFL.”
Hairston’s speed and production in college have made him a riser in some draft projections and he could end up being a first-round pick.
