The first round of NCAA March Madness tipped off Thursday.

North Carolina sent nine teams to the tournament, all vying for the men's and women's national championships. Only one men's team — Duke — remains.

On Thursday, the first teams from the state to compete included the High Point men's and women's programs and the UNC Wilmington men. The High Point men fell to Purdue 75-63, while the women of High Point lost to William & Mary 69-63. UNCW also saw its hopes of a national championship crumble, falling to Texas Tech 82-72.

On Friday, the Duke men advanced with a 93-49 victory over the Mount St. Mary Mountaineers. The North Carolina Tar Heels men's run in the tournament ended with a 71-64 loss to Ole Miss.

The Duke women on Friday cruised past Lehigh 86-25.

On Saturday, the N.C. State women defeated Vermont 75-55, UNC Greensboro fell to top-seeded USC 71-25, and the UNC women beat Oregon State 70-49.

On Sunday, No. 2 Duke women overcame No. 10 Oregon 59-53 in the second round. The Blue Devils next face either No. 3 North Carolina or No. 6 West Virginia in the Sweet 16 on Monday.
