Whether it’s on the field or the court, Dylan Jovanovic is proving that Hunter College High School athletics can bring it.

“Sports can be fun. Everyone can play sports,” Jovanovic said. “And no matter what your skill level, there’s a place for you at Hunter.”

What You Need To Know

  • Dylan Jovanovic is a tri-athlete, competing at the varsity level in lacrosse, soccer and basketball
  • She has been to the city finals five times, winning twice

  • Her true passion is soccer, which she started playing at a very young age

  • Jovanovic gives back to her community by tutoring kids and coaching them through practice tests to pass the Hunter College High School entrance exam

The tri-athlete has played in five city championships, bringing home two trophies and the first girl’s soccer title for Hunter.

“We don’t even have a field,” Jovanovic said. “We have to walk a mile to Randall’s Island to get a quarter of a field. So I think it was nice to put Hunter on the map and put city schools on the map and show we can hang with these other schools.”

Jovanovic’s soccer dreams started from the sidelines at five years old.

“I was at my brother’s 3 vs. 3 game and I told my parents, ‘I want to be on the field’,” she said.

Full of ambition — even at that age — Jovanovic joined the boys’ soccer team and then quickly jumped to a travel team with girls two years older than her.

“Soccer is my passion. I want to play professional soccer,” she said.

In between soccer seasons, the Lady Hawk also picked up lacrosse and basketball. She captains both the soccer and basketball teams where she finds a balance between giving it her all and having a good time.

“She gives 100% no matter what,” Ellen Fox, the varsity basketball coach at Hunter, said. “Whether it’s in practice or on the field, and she expects her teammates to give 100% also.”

“I want everyone on my teams to feel like it’s a fun place,” Jovanovic said. “You want to come to practice. You want to come to games. You want to make that 40-minute walk out to Randall’s island with the team just because you like being on the team.”

“I really appreciate that about her, that she takes academics seriously, but yet is an exceptional athlete,” said Annie Turner, who was Jovanovic’s social studies teacher and coaches the girl’s soccer team at Hunter.

Jovanovic is a straight-A student and leads by example in the classroom. As president of the Student’s Athletic Association, she preaches the message that sports are for everyone. She also tutors kids through test prep for the Hunter College High School entrance exam so everyone has a shot at coming to the school she loves.

“I want everyone to have an opportunity to come here,” Jovanovic said. “This is such an amazing place.”

Dylan Jovanovic is headed to Princeton to play soccer in the fall, committed to making sure everyone knows they have the potential of a game-winning goal.
