It was the community Isabella Chan was looking for, that was the original draw. It was the coach’s passion that really brought her in.

“When you see someone who loves their job and loves to teach other students, it really motivates you to do more,” Chan said.

Joining lacrosse her freshman year was her first team experience. But instead of flaring her social anxiety, she found herself in the sport. Having been there before, Chan is happy to help anyone new to the sport.

What You Need To Know

  • Isabella Chan started her freshman year of high school with no knowledge of lacrosse but the coach's passion for the sport encouraged her to put aside her anxiety and get involved

  • Though they didn't win the championships, Chan is proud of her team. Many of whom are just starting lacrosse for the first time like she did

  • Chan volunteers at the Senior Living center near her house in free time, helping seniors reconnect with the songs they remember from their past in hopes of unlocking memories old age has robbed them of

“It’s really fun to show people how fast you can adapt to it, because I didn’t know what I was doing," Chan said. "It took the other seniors to teach me how to do it.”

Though this senior was gunning for a championship title this year, she’s proud of her team.

“Because regardless of whether we win or not, I was so glad to be apart of this team," Chan said.

Unlike most people, this James Madison High School senior says she enjoyed her time quarantining in 2020.

“Staying inside and discovering who you are and what you can do. Cause during quarantine I found a lot of new skills that I liked,” Chan said.

Chan also helped to combat loneliness. She volunteered in the Senior Living center near her home, playing her flute for the residence.

“Just reminding them that they’re not alone. When we went to memory loss they actually remembered us which is really amazing. And I cried a little bit cause I made a friend there and she taught me a lot of life lessons,” Chan said.

Isabella Chan is headed to Brandeis University looking at one day becoming a surgeon. Leading the charge on helping others reach their full potential.
