This week's NY1 Scholar Athlete is nothing short of a hole in one with her teachers and teammates. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed this report.

At just six years old, April Mintz had already discovered her passion. She joined the New York City Junior Golf Club.

Since then, Mintz has been perfecting her game as a member of the Tottenville High School Golf Team.

Mintz says the sport has helped her grow as both an athlete and a student.

"Since golf is such a mental game, it's helped me in school by making me more confident in myself, definitely, and more confident in my studying and taking tests," Mintz says.

The three-time PSAL champion isn't just a star on the golf course; she shines brightly in the classroom.

Mintz ranks first in her class of more than 900.

She's taking four advanced placement courses and an intense Latin class.

Teachers say she approaches her work just like her golf swing—with focus and determination.

"I think she really likes learning so it's not just that she's good at it, so she does well. It's that she's good at it and she wants to look at it in her free time a little bit and she wants to ask good questions so she learns more," says Daniel Kane, Mintz' Latin teacher.

Mintz also keeps very busy outside of school.

She's received some of the highest honors as a Girl Scout and takes part in many charity races on Staten Island.

Though her schedule is full, her coach says she's always ready to lead the team.

"When they're walking down the fairway, it's not just playing golf, it's also, 'What should I learn for global history?' So the girls ask her, 'I've got a test coming up! Tell me about the Articles of the Confederation or about Egyptian Civilizations!'" says Demetrios Haronitis, Mintz' golf coach.

The senior plans to study civil engineering in college.

Mintz says she believes golf, much like academics, is all about being in the right mind set.

"It all just comes down to you, playing yourself, playing the course and how you respond to the conditions and what is put before you. I think it's a lot of trusting yourself and having confidence," Mintz says.

So, for staying on par in the classroom and the fairway, April Mintz is our Ford Lincoln of Queens New York One Scholar Athlete of the Week.
