The city recorded a dip in overall index crime for both all of 2024 and for the month of December, NYPD statistics released Monday show.
Overall index crime decreased by 2.9% in 2024, driven by declines in murder, robbery, burglary, grand larceny and car theft, the NYPD said.
There were 377 murders in the city in 2024, 14 fewer than in 2023, NYPD statistics show. According to the NYPD, in 2024, robberies were down 2.3%, burglaries were down 5.7%, grand larceny was down 5% and grand larceny auto was down 10.3% compared to 2023.
The NYPD logged 24 homicides last month, one fewer than the 25 recorded in December 2023. According to the NYPD, robbery was down 27.1%, burglary was down 3.2%, grand larceny was down 19.8% and grand larceny auto was down 27.6%.
The city did see an 18.9% increase in reported rapes in all of 2024 compared to 2023, as well as a 5% increase in felony assaults, the data shows. Rapes and felony assaults also increased in December 2024 compared to December 2023, by 4.4% and 0.6%, respectively.
The statistics also show that transit crime was down by 7.5% in December, with 185 incidents reported last month compared to 200 in December of last year, the NYPD said. That data comes despite several high-profile incidents in the transit system last month, including a woman being fatally set on fire on a train, and a man being shoved by another man off a subway platform and in front of an arriving train on New Year’s Eve. Transit crime was down by 5.4% for the year overall, police statistics show.
In addition, hate crimes declined by 4% in 2024 compared to 2023. They were down 63% for the month, with 43 incidents reported in December 2024 compared to 117 in December 2023.
