One teen is dead, and another is in critical condition, after separate subway surfing incidents in the Bronx.

The ongoing trend has led to at least three deaths so far this year and five last year. The fatalities come despite efforts from Mayor Eric Adams and other city officials to dissuade New Yorkers from subway surfing.

“They don’t listen, they need to listen, it’s horrible — they should value their life,” subway rider Linneth Henry said.

The MTA had launched the public awareness campaign “Subway Surfing Kills — Ride Inside, Stay Alive” last September to combat the trend.

The latest subway surfing death was a 13-year-old boy in Pelham Bay. Some community members said they’re not surprised.

“In your youth you wanna do a bunch of stuff that seems cool,” subway rider Gio Hernandez said. “Save your life, don’t do it.”

The teen fell off of a northbound 6 train between the Westchester Square and Middletown Road stations. He was found unresponsive in the street beneath the elevated tracks and pronounced dead at the scene.

Henry said she sees young people subway surfing often.

“As a subway rider and a mother, it makes me feel terrible too, because I want to say something to them sometimes, but I keep my mouth shut because I don’t want them to hit me,” Henry said.

Hernandez, a member of Gen-Z, said subway surfing was common among his group of high school friends.

“I feel like I’ve grown out of that, but in my high school days, it was a thing. I’m not sure if it’s increased from people in my group, but it’s reckless,” he said.

He believes part of it has to do with a need for better parenting, so that young people, who may be seeking attention from home, don’t act out in a dangerous manner.

The eight total fatalities between this year and last year have been across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. In the majority of cases, it’s young people getting killed.

Mayor Adams has called on social media companies before to do their part to keep these videos off of their platforms, to discourage this dangerous behavior. However, some New Yorkers want the MTA to do more.

“Maybe they can try to put something on the trains, so people can’t get access to it,” Michael Ortiz said. “It’s getting really really bad, it’s getting really really outta hand.”

In response to the latest fatal incident, New York City Transit released a statement reminding young people that subway surfing is “extremely dangerous” and “not a cheap thrill”.

The agency says it remains committed to its information campaign educating teens about the risks.
