Police are still searching for the driver of a vehicle that was involved in a police chase through a Brooklyn neighborhood on Thursday.
During the chase, the driver broke several traffic laws and hit a mother and her daughter, leaving one of them dead.
Cell phone video shared with Spectrum News NY1 shows the moments just before the driver of a speeding blue Mazda nearly causes a collision with another vehicle before hitting the victims in Bushwick.
The local community is still in shock after the incident.
"I saw the lady's legs and apparently, initially she was just, everything was just normal," said Yolanda White, who lives in a building in front of the crime scene.
"And a minute later her legs were [spasming]. And it looked like she was going into a seizure," White added.
According to police, officers were attempting to conduct a traffic stop with the driver of a blue Mazda near Knickerbocker Avenue and Eldert Street just after 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Police say the driver was driving recklessly at a high speed and blew through two stop signs before hitting the two women attempting to cross Eldert Street.
Neighbors who heard the crash immediately rushed to the scene.
"They were screaming. They were screaming loud, " said Orlando Melendez, who also lives nearby.
Juanita Vidal, 71, was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. A 44-year-old woman was also taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition.
"I saw one of the police officers doing chest compressions on I believe the grandmother until the ambulance came," said Jonathan De Jesus, another neighbor.
Tanya Rosa told NY1 that she knows the survivor.
"The one that passed away is the grandma and I feel bad because it's Mother's Day and we don't expect that and this tragedy right now," Rosa said. "I know she was trying to celebrate with her mom because her mom don't live out here."
Police say the driver also struck a few more vehicles, including a Chevrolet van and a Honda, which were both parked and unoccupied, before exiting the blue Mazda and fleeing the scene on foot.
White said she heard the impact of the collision, but doesn't recall hearing police sirens from the officers pursuing the speeding driver.
"I did not hear any of that, so maybe if they had that on, people would have been aware," White said.
NY1 reached out to the NYPD to verify whether or not the involved police vehicle was operating with police lights or sirens at the time.
"The officers attempted to conduct a vehicle stop for a traffic infraction when that vehicle fled from the location. The officers followed the vehicle but eventually lost sight of it. A few minutes later, they see the vehicle again. Before the officers can turn on the turret lights on their police vehicle, the other vehicle takes off and then strikes the two pedestrians," the NYPD said in a statement.
