One person died and five others were hurt in a shooting at a subway station in the Bronx on Monday, police said.

The shooting happened at the Mount Eden Avenue 4 train station at Jerome and Mount Eden avenues around 4:35 p.m., the FDNY said.

According to NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper, the shooting occurred when two groups of teenagers on board a northbound 4 train were involved in a dispute. Kemper said one of the individuals took out a gun and started firing shots toward passengers exiting the train and at people on the platform.

“This is not the norm that's why we’re all out here right now – outraged,” Kemper said at a news briefing. “Shootings were down last year – to have a shooter like this in the subway system is extremely rare and unacceptable.”

A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital after the incident, the NYPD said. He was identified by police on Tuesday as Obed Beltran-Sanchez.

The NYPD said five other people were also shot, including a 14-year-old girl who was shot in the foot; a 14-year-old boy who was shot once in the leg and once in the ear; a 29-year-old man who was shot in the right arm; a 29-year-old woman who was shot in the face and neck; and a 71-year-old man, who sustained unspecified injuries.

All six victims were transported to nearby hospitals, police said.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, the five people who are injured, and also the person whose life was lost,” MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said at the news briefing. “We’re mourning and determined to fight back against guns in our streets.”

The MTA said northbound 4 trains are bypassing the Mount Eden Avenue station in both directions and running on the express track from 149 Street-Grand Concourse to Burnside Avenue due to the ongoing police investigation.

In a statement, Mayor Eric Adams’ deputy mayor for communications, Fabien Levy, said Adams was aware of the shooting.

“This incident is fresh and an investigation into what occurred is ongoing,” Levy said. “At this time we do not believe this to be a random attack.”

Police say no arrests have been made, and they plan on using cameras at the station to conduct the investigation.
