A man who the NYPD has accused of shoving a woman into a subway train in Manhattan on Wednesday is now in police custody, the Newark Police Department confirmed Thursday.

Sabir Jones, 39, was detained by Newark Police just after 12:15 p.m. at McCarter Highway and Raymond Boulevard, according to the Newark Police Department.

Jones was transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals, Newark police said.

The NYPD said Wednesday that Jones was responsible for Wednesday’s incident. According to the NYPD, the victim was shoved into a southbound E train as it was leaving the Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street station. The victim’s head hit the train, and she proceeded to fall onto the tracks, the NYPD said.

The woman underwent surgery and is in critical condition, police said.

In a statment MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said, “this was a horrific crime, but I’m gratified that again the always exceptional NYPD police work led to a quick arrest.”
