A 21-year-old man was shot and killed by police on Roosevelt Island Friday night after officials say he lunged at several officers with a knife.

Officials say the incident started at around 11:30 p.m. on Friday. Police received multiple 911 calls from family members of the suspect.

“The caller was a relative inside the location who also stated that the armed male was off his medication and also under influence of marijuana,” said Assistant Chief Christine Bastedenbeck, the commanding officer of Queens North.

Four officers initially responded. Officials say body camera footage shows one staying at the front door while the other three got on an elevator. The suspect came off a second elevator and lunged at the officer by the door with a knife.

That officer retreated, but the suspect allegedly tried to attack the other officers, according to officials.

“Then the suspect charged toward the elevator that was occupied by our officers as he was still armed with the knife. The officers inside the elevator attempted to deploy a taser and also discharged their firearm, striking the suspect. A large knife was recovered from the right hand of the suspect,” Bastedenbeck said.

More authorities arrived on the scene after the shooting. Long-time residents of the island say incidents like this are not common.

“Never, never heard of a situation like this before,” said Roosevelt Island resident Jonathan Singh.

Officials say officers tried to give the suspect aid after the shooting before he was taken to the hospital by first responders. But he died about 30 minutes later.

Nobody else was hurt. The shooting remains under investigation.
