Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the lives lost while serving our nation. AAA is reminding you this time of year is also the start of what's become known as the 100 deadliest days for teenage drivers.

The agency has reported dramatic rises in fatal crashes involving teens during summer months. Over a recent 10-year period in New York, 185 people died in summertime crashes involving teens.

Police and safety advocates are reminding parents to speak with their children about this.

"The last thing a deputy wants to do is pull a teen from a crash, possibly place them in an ambulance or even worse, and then go knock on a family member's door," said Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter. "A lot of this can be prevented."

AAA is promoting key driver safety practices such as staying off the phone, obeying speed limits and avoiding impaired driving.
