Two more people who suffered critical injuries in a fire in Washington Heights Sunday have died from those injuries, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said Thursday.

The death toll of the fire now stands at four. Fire officials said on Tuesday that two other people died of injuries sustained in the blaze.

According to the FDNY, the fire broke out on the fourth floor of a five-story apartment building on West 190th Street Sunday afternoon.

The blaze was sparked by a lithium-ion battery, fire officials said.

“This significant fire should serve as a reminder to New Yorkers about the need to remain vigilant about e-safety - we don't want to see any more lives lost due to lithium-ion battery fires,” FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh wrote in a statement.

The FDNY didn’t immediately release the victims’ names or ages.

At a news conference Tuesday, Kavanagh said lithium-ion batteries have sparked 76 fires so far this year.

“Now, for the first time in decades, lithium-ion related fire deaths so far this year have surpassed electrical fires as the leading cause of fire deaths in New York City - something that can be avoided and a trend we must reverse,” Kavanagh wrote in Thursday’s statement.
