Two days after his 16-year-old son was stabbed outside his Bronx high school in Kingsbridge Heights, Geilot Fermin remains hopeful he will open his eyes. His son has had five surgeries so far.

“He wants justice, he feels that parents shouldn’t have to be worrying about their kids coming out of school and not getting home safe because they’re working,” said Fermin speaking through community activist, Awilda Cordero, who translated for him.

Police say a group of five males jumped Fermin’s son Tuesday afternoon. One of the individuals stabbed him in the side. All five fled the scene, heading southbound on Jerome Avenue.

The boy’s father has been by his bedside since. He received a phone call from Mayor Eric Adams Thursday promising to catch those responsible.

“He’s very happy that the Mayor Adams called him. Makes him feel that the mayor is very humble and worries about our people in the community and he knows the pain I’m going through as a father,” said Fermin.

Fermin said his son has been a student at the International School for Liberal Arts for the past two years. He’s also an avid basketball player. The dad said his son had been having issues with individuals in his school recently.

“They were bothering him about a month ago, so this has been going on for quite a while,” said Fermin.

Awilda Cordero said this has also been particularly hard on Fermin who’s a single father. He moved to the Bronx from the Dominican Republic six years ago.

“He doesn’t hardly go home. He’s not working, so he really needs a lot of help now. Not only his son is in critical condition, but he’s behind on all his bills,” said Cordero.

Fermin said he’s grateful his son is still alive and fighting. He now wants those responsible behind bars.

“He wants them to turn themselves in because they did it what they did. They need to pay for it,” said Fermin.
