As tens of thousands of superheroes, ghouls, goblins and monsters hit the streets for the annual Village Halloween Parade, the NYPD will be there in big numbers too along the Sixth Avenue route.
"We are going to have about 2,000 officers out there that you are going to see,” NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said.
There will be a large security detail to try to help keep people safe and maintain order with large crowds expected in the area as revelers flock to restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
And not all the officers will be front and center – some will be blending in. Though, Corey would not confirm if some cops would be in costume.
"We are going to have plainclothes officers working through the crowd of course. We are going to have our explosive detection K9's out there and our counter-terrorism overlay,” he said. “Bottom line we know how to keep New Yorkers safe."
Five years ago, a terrorist attack killed eight people in Manhattan, just hours before the Halloween parade when a man drove a pick-up truck down the bike path along the West Side Highway.
The suspect in the attack, Sayfullo Saipov, is expected to face a federal trial in the coming days.
Even after that attack though, the parade went off without a hitch, with heightened security.
When it comes to Halloween security this year, the NYPD says there will be plenty of cops around to try to prevent mischief and violence and to give people a sense of safety.
“A lot of extra officers pushed on into the evening shift on Halloween,” said Corey. “When the kids come home from school, we know they go out trick-or-treating. We want those officers out there in the neighborhood.”
The NYPD recommends New Yorkers use all of the usual Halloween safety tips while out and about this evening, including staying in groups, checking candy before eating and slowing down when driving to keep an eye out for anyone out trick-or-treating.
