A public school employee was shot in the head Tuesday in Brooklyn about a block away from the school he was working at, according to the NYPD.
Police say the shooting occurred Tuesday just after 2:45 p.m. at the corner of Avenue M and Utica Avenue in Flatlands.
The 19-year-old victim is a paraprofessional who on Tuesday was working at P.S. 203 Floyd Bennett School, which is near the location of the shooting, the NYPD said.
According to police, the victim was walking down the street towards Utica Avenue when a gunman fired four shots, striking the teenager once in the head. The victim then stumbled into a deli.
Police described the suspect as a male wearing a black parka jacket with fur on the hood, a red ski mask, a red sweatshirt and a red hair cover at the time of the shooting. The victim, who is in critical condition, was the intended target, according to police, but authorities said the exact circumstances of the shooting are unclear as of Tuesday.
"When you hear stuff like this happening right here, it’s just like, 'wow, what’s going on?' It’s never like this,” Lafilica Pierre, a resident in the neighborhood, said.
After the shooting, police officers blocked off much of Avenue M as they looked for evidence. Bullets hit a parked car and a glass window of the deli, leaving a visible hole.
"You got the school right there. The teachers are great. It’s shocking and its sad," Pierre said.
On Twitter, Mayor Eric Adams called the shooting "a tragedy."

Schools Chancellor David Banks said security will be increased around the school after the incident.
"I am in contact with the school's principal and will ensure that the students have the counseling services they need as they grapple with this tragedy and will be working with the NYPD to increase security around the school," Banks said in a statement Tuesday.
Residents want to see more police in the area following the recent shooting.
"We don’t need to be a problem for you to be in the streets," Pierre said. "There needs to be more police out here."
