NEW YORK—A 15-year-old girl was struck by a stray bullet while inside her home in Queens late Tuesday evening, according to the NYPD.
The incident occurred around 11:05 p.m. at 205-21 113th Road when multiple shots were fired outside of the victim’s residence where 21 shell casings were recovered, police said.
The incident marked the second time in two weeks in which a Queens resident was struck by a stray bullet inside their home.
The teen was struck in the right shin by a stray bullet while sitting in her dining room, police said. She was transported to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center and is expected to survive.
Her father, Mohammed Hossain said that in the three years living in the neighborhood, this is the first time a shooting occurred.
"They are innocent, so we have to protect them," Hossain said.
He identified his daughter as Pamima Samira Hossain, a student from Bronx Science High School, and said she was already studying again after spending the night in the hospital.
A note outside of the residence read, “Hey besties, girl who got shot here! I have no comment. Come back after the Regents for a statement.”
“She is happy. She is very smart,” Hossain said. “So I have no problem of this, but I am concerned about the community.”
"This neighborhood, all the people know me and I know them," Hossain added.
Police said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Two men were seen leaving the scene, according to police.
On Memorial Day, a 72-year-old woman was struck in her right arm while inside her home on 128th Street, near 107th Avenue, in South Ozone Park.
Police said bullets entered through a living room window and the 72-year-old was not the intended target of the shooting.
Authorities have yet to make an arrest in connection with the incident.
